Instructions:

We will work through the following series of activities as a group and hold small group work and discussions in Zoom Breakout Rooms. Follow the instructions in each sub-section when the instructor assigns you to a breakout room.

Activities:

Activity 1: Introduction by the instructor (5 minutes)

The instructor will give a brief introduction to the class to follow up on the welcome video.

Now it is time that we all learn about our cohort for the class. Each time we go to breakout rooms, you should discuss the following with your peers:

  1. What is your name and major of study? What are your preferred pronouns?
  2. What is your previous experience in statistics?
  3. Why are you currently enrolled in STAT 757?
  4. What is your interest in statistics?

Activity 2: Where to find resources (10 minutes)

This class will follow a non-standard format to better accommodate online and distance learning. All of our material will be online, but there are several important places for information and / or class assignments:

  1. The Course Archive;
  2. The Course Syllabus;
  3. DataCamp; and
  4. Webcampus.

Discuss the following with your peers:

  1. Where are two places that you can see the current schedule of lessons and assignments? Where can you find old lesson materials?
  2. What assignments are there currently assigned / due? What is a discussion post? Where can you find the discussion forum?
  3. Is there usually weekly homework? How often are quizzes?
  4. When are public office hours available? How should I contact the instructor for questions?
  5. Where can I find announcements by the instructor regarding the course and important health announcements from the university?

We will discuss the questions from activity 2 as a class.

Activity 3: Getting to know the course policies (10 minutes)

Discuss the following with your peers:

  1. What is Netiquette and what are some good examples of Netiquette expectations?
  2. What is the late policy for homework and assignments? Are there any exceptions for special circumstances? Is there extra credit?
  3. What is DataCamp? How do I get a free license to their content? Can I be excused from this if I am already confident as a programmer in R?
  4. Is there a required book? What is the required technology for the class? Will I need to install software? Is the software free?
  5. Are notes and / or other resources allowed on the quizzes? Can electronic resources be used on the quizzes? Can someone work on the quiz with help from anyone else?
  6. Are notes and / or other resources allowed on the exams? What about electronic resources?
  7. What are the weights of different assignments in this class?

Activity 4: Midterms and Finals (10 Minutes)

Discuss the following with your peers:

  1. What is the tentative date of the first midterm?
  2. What is the tentative date of the second midterm? Is it an exam or a project?
  3. When is the final due? In what format will the final be presented?
  4. What are the expectations about originality of work and academic integrity with projects? Can I work with another classmate on my project? Who will receive credit?
